I'm Chelsea.

“Let’s get away for the weekend” seems to be a common phrase recently. With the Texas heat, crowded pools, and hustle & bustle of downtown, a little retreat away from it all always sounds like a good idea. But where to go that’s convenient, doesn’t require a plane, yet feels nothing like downtown Austin?

Sage Hill Inn & Spa. Located just over 25 miles from Austin in Texas Hill Country, you would never know you were just a quick drive down MoPac & 290 from this little slice of Texas heaven. Read on to find out why Sage Hill Inn just might be your new favorite weekend retreat.

The Hotel

Sage Hill Inn & Spa is truly a slice of Texas paradise just minutes from downtown. From the minute you pull up, the rest of the world seems miles away and quietness is embraced. Before I moved out here from California, this is how I viewed Texas to be.

The Inn is made up of 16 rooms, suites and cottages scattered throughout 90 acres (although most of the suites/houses are located right near the main living area). A living room space complete with TV, books, games, unlimited popcorn and coffee acts as the core of Sage Hill Inn, inviting guests to come by and stay awhile. Adjacent to the living room is the dining room where breakfast and dinner is served, although you may also take breakfast on the back porch overlooking the expansive grounds.

The Toalson King Suite

We checked into the Toalson King Suite, which is situated on the ground floor of the log-cabin-esque building right off the main area. The large suite features two bedrooms – one master with a king sized bed and one smaller room with a twin bed. There is a small kitchen area(with free mini bar of non-alcoholic beverages!) off  of the living room complete with a fireplace and TV. The bathroom is spacious with a very nice whirlpool tub and window that lets in natural light.

My favorite areas however are the front and back porches. Both are complete with two rocking chairs and invite you to sit down and stay awhile with a book and nice cup of tea.

Pricing is between $399-499 per night for the Toalson Suite. Other rooms start at $299 per night and run up to $699 per night for the 3 bedroom cottage.

Food & Beverage

One of the best things about Sage Hill is that breakfast and 3-course dinner daily is included in your stay – and it is not your average hotel fare. The curated menu by Chef Kristen Abram is composed of nearly 100% local ingredients and changes weekly based on what seasonal ingredients she has on hand.

On the morning we had at breakfast at Sage Hill Inn, we had Farm Fresh Made-to-Order Eggs and Oatmeal with Strawberries & Almonds. Additionally, they put out pastries, fresh fruit and muesli for you to grab as you wish. One of my favorite aspects of breakfast was the pecan coffee – you could really taste the pecan!

Just like breakfast, the dinner prix fixe menu changes daily as well. For our starter we had a choice of a Mushroom Tart with Fried Quail Egg or Zucchini Fritters with Beetroot Puree & Feta. For entrees, we had the choice of Moroccan Lamb Tagine or Kale Stuffed Pork Chop with Rosemary Cream. Dessert was just a delicious with a choice of Cookies & Milk or Grilled Peach with Port Reduction. They were great at accommodating my dietary needs and made my meal lactose-free!

Things To Do

Your goal should be to unplug and r-e-l-a-x when coming to Sage Hill Inn & Spa, and they have plenty of feel good activities to help you do that. The on-site spa has two treatment rooms that can be adjoined for couples massages. I highly recommend getting a massage here!

Pool time means relaxation time in my book, and Sage Hill Inn’s expansive pool deck does just the trick. It is partially shaded by native oaks for those hot summer days but also offers a large hot tub for cold winter nights. The pool area is equipped with a cooler full of waters, sunscreen, floaties & more!

When those feet grow restless from too much relaxation (but is there even such a thing?), put on your hiking shoes and go explore the acres of land that surround the property. There are over 3 miles miles of scenic hiking trails that will take you past the creek, through the trees, and allow you to see a variety of wildlife. Pick up a hiking map and follow the trails!

Itching to get out and explore Hill Country some more? Drive to nearby Duchman Winery for wine tasting and Salt Lick for some good ol’ Texas BBQ!

My favorite activity however is taking in the beautiful Texas sunsets at the fire pit. I don’t think they can much more stunning!
