I'm Chelsea.

Hi, Cara Usher here! I am a Certified Holistic Health Coach, a friend of Chelsea’s and a huge fan of Passport to Friday.

I don’t travel quite as much as Chelsea these days, but have done my fair share in the past. I know that the summer months are a very popular time to travel. As a Health Coach, I also know that it is one thing to eat healthy at home (as you can cook all of your meals and have a say as to how much salt, fat, sugar, etc. is in your dish). But it is a whole other ball game trying to eat healthy on-the-go, especially while traveling to different cities, states, and countries around the world. Here are a few of my tips & strategies for staying & eating healthy on-the-go:

Always have healthy snacks on hand! This will help you through the airport, on the plane, in the hotel, or in a hunger emergency. These are a few of my favorite healthy snacks (I rarely leave the house without one of these in my purse):

  • Raw almond packets from Trader Joe’s
  • EPIC Bar – Almond Cranberry & Sriracha Chicken (great protein sources!)
  • LARABAR – Cashew Cookie, Carrot Cake, Coconut Creme Pie are a few of my favorites. These bars are low in sugar and are a great fruit and nut alternative while traveling, as it is sometimes hard to get organic, fresh fruit in some cities.
  • Kombucha – GT’s Kombucha is my favorite brand, as it is lower in sugar content compared to some other brands. Gingerade, Trilogy, Multigreens and Guava are my favorite flavors. Kombucha is a great source of probiotics, which help to keep your immune & digestive systems in check (and we all know how those both weaken when traveling).
  • Justin’s Almond Butter packets & an organic apple – A super easy snack that is packed with healthy carbs & fats.

I always bring protein powder packets when I travel. A few of my favorites are Garden of Life Raw Fit Vegan Protein Powder (it comes in plan, vanilla & chocolate) and Vega One (mixed berry is a great flavor). Organic, plant-based, vegan, no bad ingredients, and lots of healthy protein to keep you full while you’re on the go.

Oatmeal is super easy to pack & a great item to have on hand for quick hotel room or airplane breakfasts. You can get gluten-free oatmeal cups that are great for traveling (I like Bob’s Red Mill as it’s gluten-free & organic).

Drink PLENTY of water! Traveling dehydrates you, so it is very important to drink lots of liquids. Purchase a stainless steel water bottle that keeps cold for 24 hours, like my favorite one Jos Water Bottle or a Hydroflask that comes in a smaller container. Add some lemon slices in there before you leave for your trip for extra health benefits and flavor.

To add onto the liquids, I never leave without my Arbonne Energy Fizz Sticks, Digestive Aid, and Detox Tea. I take enough so that I have one of each per day of travel. I have my energy fizz stick and digestive aid (I like to combine them together in an 8oz glass of water or my water bottle) and have around 2pm. I like to sip on the Detox tea about an hour or so before bed. It helps to relax me and aids in flushing out toxins from the day.

I always bring Natural Calm Magnesium Powder packets with me. I like to drink a small glass before bedtime as magnesium has many benefits – it helps with headaches, fatigue, muscle cramps & aches, anxiety, and helps to relax the body. Most importantly, it helps to get the digestive system moving – which always seem to slow while traveling, doesn’t it?

Don’t be afraid to stop in at the local grocery store. Not only will it save you money, but you can make healthy choices, where at a restaurant may be harder to do so. You can also stock up on local fresh fruits and veggies for snacks throughout the day!

Stay active – hotel room yoga, anyone? Use a hotel towel to replace your mat. On your way out? Have the taxi stop a block or so before your destination or walk for a few minutes before calling a cab. Check out the hotel gym and see how creative you can be!

Dining out – eat half. If you’re eating out multiple times a day, keep in mind that most often American meals at restaurants are double the size they should be. Divide your plate in half before you begin eating and have your waitress box up the other half. This way you will have leftovers for your next meal AND eat less than you normally would! You will save money and calories 🙂

A few of my other essentials:

  • Lavender essential oil is a must in my carry on. It helps to calm me during travels and especially before bed if I have jet-lag. Not to mention it smells amazing!
  • Hand sanitizer – I have a lavender hand sanitizer from EO that is always in my purse. It is so easy to catch germs during travel, so I like to keep as sanitize as possible!
  • Dermalogica Antioxidant Hydramist – comes in a 1oz spray bottle that is perfect for traveling (I carry one in my purse) for a quick hydrating mist to get back your glow!

What are some of your travel tips or essentials? I’d love to hear your recommendations!
