Welcome to the party!
This was kind of a funny trip for me. I bought the trip for me and my ex-boyfriend at a silent auction last year. We went our separate ways, and I was stuck with this trip and hoping a friend of mine might want to tag along. With the expiration date fast approaching, I found 3 free days in between work trips and booked it. It happened to be in the middle of the week, so naturally none of my friends could accompany me because they had work. Flying solo it is. The introvert in me was secretly elated because this meant alone “me” time that I so desperately need after spending weeks being a smiling, talkative, hospitable face with groups. As luck has it, I had to extend a work trip in Cabo so now I was heading to the Dominican Republic alone for only 2 days. Nonetheless I was SO excited for a vacation I didn’t even care that it had quickly diminished to such a quick trip. Bring on the coconut mojitos and reading an entire book in one day.
This is where my series of unfortunate events really started happening. I won’t get into it all but I’ll give you the gist of it. It includes the airplane battery dying on my first flight and nearly missing my connection, getting locked out of my transportation to the resort and waiting in the airport parking lot for a locksmith, my computer crashing so not getting any work done (blessing in disguise probably), and my luggage getting lost momentarily at the resort. I deal with a lot of travel hiccups, but I started feeling like maybe taking a 2 day vacation to the Caribbean by myself wasn’t my smartest decision.
All my mishaps aside, I had a lovely two days at Breathless Punta Cana. And let’s just say I needed that one full day to unplug and unwind on the beach with my fresh coconut water (that may have been spiked with some coconut rum, because vacation) in hand. Maybe next time I’ll bring a plus one and actually stay longer than one full day to fully appreciate this fun resort.
The Resort
This resort is huge with lots of pool and beach areas to lounge. With only one full day here, I spent most of my time on the beach and actually never went to the pool. I have to say being an xhale club member was great because it gave me access to better, less crowded beach areas.
I loved the beach yoga class and appreciated that they had the class at 8am because the classes tend to be at 9:30am which is too late in my opinion sometimes. They also offered yoga sculpt, beach body boot camp and paddle boarding classes.
The wifi was pretty bad but then again I’m always working when traveling so I’m sensitive to it not working absolutely everywhere and all of the time. It makes for a great, distraction-free vacation though!
The Room
The bright, eclectic decor in inviting vibrant colors makes you feel like like you’re right in paradise! My room was an xhale club oceanfront room, and the view did not disappoint. Cup of coffee on the balcony in the morning? Yes please!
The things I didn’t like were the extremely dark bathroom with horrible lighting and parts of the room and decor felt kind of dated. The room also felt more humid and sticky than I’m used to in similar climates.
Food & Beverage
I liked how there were a good amount of choices for dinner at Breathless and some of them went beyond your standard all-inclusive styles of cuisine. Every all-inclusive seems to have an Italian, French, and Asian restaurant, but I was excited to see an Eastern Mediterranean restaurant included in the line-up here.
You will never go hungry as a substantial meal seems like it’s always available (they have a restaurant open nightly in which they offer a “Snack Nocturno” from 11:30pm to 6am and there’s 24 hour room service). No reservations are accepted in the restaurants except for the hibachi tables at Silk City. Supposedly there’s a lobster night party every Friday night which I would have loved to try out.
Favorites:
- Fresh coconut water on the beach
- Fried plantains, steamed vegetables and egg white omelet at Bites or The Strip Grill breakfast buffet
- Grilled Vegetable Salad at The Strip Grill lunch (xhale club only)
- Lebanese Mezze (hummus, moutabel, tabbouleh salad, falafel & kibbeh), Turkish-Style Scallops (marinated scallops with sauteed lentils, peppers roasted with orange, olives, vinegar dressing and crispy fennel), and Eastern Mediterranean Chicken Cous Cous (traditional vegetable based recipe with chickpeas and sultana raisins) at Kibbeh
- Anything with plantains at Sofrito
Safe travels y’all!
